Definition of Ecotourism
ANDECO adopts the definition of Ecotourism of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN):
The IUCN defines Ecotourism as: "Environmentally responsible visiting of relatively unspoilt natural areas, in order to enjoy and appreciate nature (and any accompanying cultural features - both past and present), that promotes conservation, has low negative visitor impact, and provides for beneficially active socio-economic involvement of local populations". (Hector Ceballos-Lascurain, Tourism, Ecotourism and Protected Areas, IUCN, 1996).

ANDECO adheres to the 7 Principles of Ecotourism proposed by Martha Honey
It involves trips to unspoilt areas.
It minimizes environmental impacts.
It promotes an ecological awareness.
It provides direct financial benefits to conservation.
It provides economic benefits to and a strengthening of, local communities.
It respects local culture.
It supports human rights and democratic movements.
